The Problem
Shopify's theme system was a ceiling
The brand needed editorial-quality pages, bespoke animations, and a design system that felt entirely their own — impossible inside Liquid templates. On top of that, the default storefront was loading 4MB of JavaScript on every page visit, costing them mobile conversions.
The Solution
Headless React front, Shopify back
Used Shopify's Storefront API via GraphQL as a pure commerce engine — cart, checkout, inventory — while a Next.js frontend handles everything visible. Sanity CMS gives the content team full editorial control without touching code. Result: 94ms average first load.
